ZQuest Tutorial News

August 24, 2002

I finally got some time to add a couple of things I've been sitting on for a while now, mostly having to do with the Downloads section. First, Dr. Enigmatic recently submitted to me a new Quest Info Sheet that can be used to keep track of things such as shop types, pay-for-info types, quest cheat codes, and (very important) your password. Quoted from the author: "I got real sick of flashing back and forth forgetting what was where. Of course, I started taking notes. They were horrible. Unorganized, hard to read, and confusing. So therefore, I made up a spreadsheet with organized rows with titles and so forth..." Check it out and be sure to let Dr. Enigmatic know what you think of it by using the e-mail link there.

Second, due to popular demand, I have decided to bring back the original HTML offline tutorial. The good thing about this is that it will always be up-to-date. Back in the day, whenever I made changes to the tutorial, no matter how subtle, I updated the HTML tutorial. I intend to continue this trend.

Third, the template file needed to create your own User Contribution is available for download. The procedure is now greatly simplified from the monstrosity I originally proposed in this thread on the AGN Forums. Now, all you need to do is make edits to the template file. There is no longer a need to recreate the tutorial folder structure.

Finally, in case you didn't already know, I once again have a working domain name. My new web address is now www.casadealphadawg.com. (For those of you who are completely clueless when it comes to Spanish, that means "home of AlphaDawg.") Also, in light of Armageddon Games' recent outage (though it has come back online right around the time I am typing this), the tutorial is now mirrored there as part of my Zelda Classic page.

I finally got some time to add two of the pending user contributions. (That sounds a lot friendlier than "third-party additions," does it not?) Click here to check them out. I'm off tomorrow so I'll try to add a couple more then.

Some of you have probably noticed that the domain alphadawgonline.com (No! Don't click the link!) hasn't been resolving for a while. Well, I decided to switch hosts, and Yahoo has been less than cooperative in releasing the domain name. Even though you get my information when you "whois" the domain they seem to think they own it. (Just for that I'm not giving them a hyperlink... that'll show 'em!) Anyway, most likely I'll have to register a new domain name. I'll make sure to let everybody know once I do.

So many changes to report, where oh where should I start? Okay, I'll start with the most obvious one, the new tutorial "skin." Once again, this was a snap to implement thanks to Cascading Style Sheets. Background courtesy of FreeBackgroundZone.com.

The Downloads section has been overhauled. Most notably, the link for the Microsoft Word tutorial contributed by WolfePak now works. The reason it never worked before was due to a shortage of space available on the zeldaclassic.com server. The file is now hosted on the reliable alphadawgonline.com server, so for the immediate future there should be no problems downloading it. Also, links are provided to the free Microsoft Word and Excel (for the dungeon and overworld grids) viewers for those who don't have access to these programs.

The main page has been redesigned somewhat to allow direct access to the new additions and the third-party additions... ah, yes, the third-party additions! In case you missed this announcement, I am now accepting your contributions to the tutorial! All the information you need to know regarding submissions can be found in the announcement.

Seems like it's been forever since the last update, eh? Well, it's been forever since I had a day off from my new job at Best Buy, so there you go... nah, I just started that job last week, I've just been really busy with a bunch of other stuff.

Anyway, I have a couple announcements to make. First, the offline tutorial as we know it is no more! There are now two much better offline tutorials available... an eBook tutorial courtesy of JayeM from the AGN Forums. You can move around this one much like the old offline tutorial, only now it's just one file to download, not hundreds! The second is in Microsoft Word format courtesy of WolfePak from the forums. This one combines all the pages from the old offline tutorial into one long (109 pages... wow!) document. This version is also much more printer-friendly than the old tutorial.

Both will be updated as the online tutorial is updated. Be sure to check out both offline tutorials, I'm sure they'll be worth your time and more! Snag them at the downloads page.

Second, let me officially give credit to Goatboy from the forums for the ZQuest Tutorial banner you've been seeing in my AGN Forums signature for a while now. Certainly you've seen it before, but if you haven't, check it out below.

If you'd like to add the banner to your AGN Forums signature simply copy and paste the UBB code below:

And if you'd like to add the banner to any webpage simply copy and paste the HTML code below:

Next, since Microsoft's free ListBot service no longer exists, neither does my mailing list. I will continue to post notifications of ZQuest Tutorial updates on ZeldaClassic.com and in the ZC Quest Editor Help forum, so be sure to check those out regularly!

I'm off until Thursday, so maybe I'll be able to sneak in a content update or two. I also plan to update the Mailbag (because God knows I've received plenty of e-mails lately, which I plan to answer eventually, I promise!), so stay tuned!

I have added a new chapter to the tutorial on a topic that has been requested for a long time: secret combos. Click here to check it out!

June 16, 2001

All of the promised corrections to the original five chapters (plus a few to more recent additions) have been made! Hopefully all of the inaccurate information is a thing of the past now!

Big news! The Comprehensive ZQuest Tutorial is now The Official ZQuest Tutorial. From now on the tutorial can be found at http://www.zeldaclassic.com/zqtutorial. Make sure to update your bookmarks! Also, future updates to the tutorial will be announced on both this news page and the ZeldaClassic.com main page! Many thanks to War Lord for offering to host the tutorial!

As for future content updates, I plan to fix problems with the original five chapters that either I have noticed or have been pointed out to me since they were first uploaded.

Here it is, the big update you've all been waiting for! Here's what's new:

March 4, 2001

The updates on BS-Zelda graphics and palette cycling have been uploaded, albeit a little later than I plannned. Well, what are you waiting for? Go check them out!

Ah, Spring Break is here! And this year it really is a break! I didn't bring anything school-related with me... hopefully I don't regret that decision later. Anyway, as I write this, I am about to begin work on an addition to the ZQuest Tutorial. Due to popular demand, today's additions will be (drum roll, please):

Look for more updates over the course of the break.

February 27, 2001

As you can see, I've made some pretty big updates to the tutorial. Here are the details:

As for the next content update, look for one sometime during Spring Break (next week, March 5-9).
